16 Apr Unboxing Videos

An “unboxing” is a video where someone unboxes a product and narrates the experience step-by-step. While it’s a simple concept, this type of video has been growing in popularity for the last few years, especially with YouTubers.
At least 62% of consumers use unboxing videos to research something they want to buy, and unboxing views increase 34% during the Christmas season.
Why do they work?
When an unboxer is excited over a product, the viewer can’t help but feel a similar sense of excitement. Unboxings help the viewer visualize the product and understand if it fits their needs. These videos also replace the tactile experience of trying something in the store. If someone knows exactly what they’ll be buying and how it works, they’ll be more likely to make the purchase.
Here are some tips to creating an effective unboxing video:
- Use a good camera.
- Make sure you’re filming in a well lit location.
- Clear / clean the unboxing space so there are no visual distractions.
- Ask your customers to create and share their own unboxing videos. Viewers are more likely to trust.
- Consider your product’s packaging – everything from the product itself to the wrapping, box contents, packaging tape, etc. Every part of a package will be scrutinized, and creating packaging with the customer in mind helps them feel even more excited over a product.
- Showcase the product benefits.
- Demonstrate how the product works or should be used.
- Make it entertaining.
- Provide advice when possible (tips to keep something clean, alternate uses, etc.).
